First Thoughts
Way better than I thought it would be. I didn’t know I’d be giving it 5 stars until the very end. The story was honestly great. I HATED the revenge gender swap, just as I hate how it’s the opposite in real life but it was a very creative choice. And things were made well in the end. I was afraid it would be cheesy, like women cartoonishly acting like toxic men, but it was done quite tastefully instead. So yeah, 5 stars. Hesitantly, 5 stars. I’m not mad I’m getting the book box editions, which was my main reason for reading this ARC.

“And what would you be getting out of this arrangement?”
“Certainly not your pleasing personality.”
The Story
In What Fury Brings, FMC Olerra is trying to become the heir to the throne. She lives in a female ruled society, where men are treated like slaves and playthings and accessories. As she is of royal blood, she is in the running to become queen some day, but it will come down to a vote by the nobles: Olerra or her (evil) cousin. The best way Olerra can think of to gain favor, and votes, is to get married. And since there are so few men of royal blood in her kingdom, she must find her husband in a different one. By find, I mean kidnap. Trying to avoid war, she decides a rival King’s SECOND son is the best option. A man known to be docile, gentle, and an easy choice for a future queen’s trophy husband. What she doesn’t know is she kidnapped the wrong prince! The heir to a throne himself, Sanos finds himself kidnapped and taken to a place where women rule and men are treated like dirt. Then pretty much… chaos ensues.
“Men are to be seen but not heard unless expressly told otherwise,” she continued. “You are free to speak to me whenever you wish when we are alone. However, in front of the courtiers, you need to behave.”
The Romance
What Fury Brings has an interesting romantic build for sure. Any captor/captive romance will. Olerra and Sanos have to navigate so many complex situations while finding love for each other. Him hiding his identity and trying to find a way home to keep his family safe from his villain father, and her trying to win the throne while also keeping safe the man she vows to protect. And through this all, they are fighting their feelings for each other, for obvious reasons. It’s the definition of complicated. Somehow, though, this author makes it sweet at times, intense at others. The passion, the tension, the yearning, the banter, it’s all so well done.
”You didn’t try to escape,” she said.
“As if I would have made it farther than I had last time.”
“You like it here, admit it.”
“I like you,” he corrected. “I tolerate everything else.”
I didn’t know how they would find their happily ever after with so much working against them, but I needed it. I didn’t want to put the book down because I NEEDED to see a resolution. And I needed to know that they would work together to create a more equal society, to stop the injustices against men AND women. I needed them to bring their ideas together to find a solution.
”I didn’t realize that being taken by you was the thing that I needed most.”
Olerra brought their clasped hands to her lips and kissed the back of his hand.
“You need never be alone again,” she said
Final Thoughts
I started reading What Fury Brings to decide if the book box editions would be worth it, and, unfortunately for my wallet, it is. I was originally hesitant to give it 5 stars, but as I wrote this review I realized I didn’t have a bad thing to say about it. So that’s an easy 5 stars in my opinion. The only thing I would change is for there to be a book two! But regardless, I’m so happy I read it. Thanks so much to NetGalley and Macmillan for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this ARC! Highly recommend!
