First Thoughts
I loved it! Love Is a War Song is just what I needed. It was a quick, easy read that made me feel ALL the feelings. I laughed, I cried, and I definitely learned some things. It was strange (in a good way) to read a story set in the town I live in! A pop star falls for a cowboy in this romance and it was a joy to read!
- Enemies to lovers
- Pop star meets cowboy
- Native American rep
- Same horse!
1st Person POV
Danica Nava’s writing here was perfect for the feel of the book. We were really able to understand the struggles Avery was going through and feel the emotions along with her. I was happy when she was happy, sad when she was sad, STRESSED when she was stressed. It was so easy to read and kept me captivated the whole time.
The Story
Rising pop star Avery Fox is suddenly the focus of a scandal that threatens to ruin her career. She has been accused to taking advantage of her native ancestry in the worst way according to the social media masses after a controversial music video premiers. According to Avery’s mother, she MUST go stay with her grandmother in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to lay low and stay safe after receiving death threats. It also works out perfectly for the sake of damage control as Avery has an opportunity to learn more about being Native and meet the family she has never known. She gets more than she bargained for when her hard-headed grandmother isn’t going to just let her sit around doing nothing. Avery must learn all about caring for horses and helping with the family horse business – all while attempting to save the ranch she is growing to love.
The Romance
Our MMC, Lucas, HATES Avery. He’s seen the video, the press. He hates what she represents. Then he meets her, and well let’s just say it becomes a struggle to keep up the ire. Lucas works for Avery’s grandmother on the ranch so it’s impossible to stay away from each other and they both fall hard and fast. Problem is, neither of them wants to admit it!
My only issue with this book is how mean Lucas is to Avery for most of the book. I get his reasoning I suppose, but the level of hate was certainly unnecessary. It did make for a very satisfying moment when they finally give in to the tension. They know the relationship is doomed, and do everything they can to prevent it, but the yearning is real.
The spice was just right, not too much to be overwhelming but HOT. I’m a sucker for being called “baby” so I completely melted toward the end. Also… “Good girl”. Need I say more?
Final Thoughts
I rarely read a good rom-com anymore, so Love Is a War Song was a really refreshing surprise. I mainly read it because it is the July Afterlight subscription box book, and I wanted to see if I should skip or not. Needless to say, I will NOT be skipping this one, and I can’t wait to receive my special edition! Thanks so much to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing Group for allowing me to read and review this ARC.
